When China Sneezes, Asia Catches a Cold: the Effects of China’s Export Decline in the Realm of the Global Economic Crisis

In this discussion report, we dispel the widely held misconception that China’s economy is excessively export-dependent and therefore particularly vulnerable to a drop in export demand. In the past two decades, China’s dramatic exports rise has largely been driven by the fact that many foreign firms have offshored a slice of their value chain – labor-intensive final assembly – to China for export purposes. Many of these assembly plants heavily rely on imported inputs from East Asian economies to produce their export products. Because of this feature, China passes on a large portion of its negative export demand shocks to the East Asian economies by reducing demand for their imported inputs. Using recent trade data, we provide evidence of this business cycle pass-through during the current economic crisis.

Jaynes Cummings treatment of superconducting resonators with dielectric loss due to two-level systems

We perform a quantum mechanical analysis of superconducting resonators subject to dielectric loss arising from charged two-level systems. We present numerical and analytical descriptions of the dynamics of energy decay from the resonator within the Jaynes-Cummings model. Our analysis allows us to distinguish the strong and weak coupling regimes of the model and to describe within each regime cases where the two-level system is unsaturated or saturated. We find that the quantum theory agrees with the classical model for weak coupling. However, for strong coupling the quantum theory predicts lower loss than the classical theory in the unsaturated regime. Also, in contrast to the classical theory, the photon number at which saturation occurs in the strong coupling quantum theory is independent of the coupling between the resonator and the two-level system.Comment: 9 pages, 8 figure

The role of trade costs in global production networks : evidence from China's processing trade regime

In a seminal contribution, Yi (2003) has shown that vertically specialized trade should be more sensitive to changes in trade costs than regular trade. Yet empirical evidenceof this remains remarkably scant. This paper uses data from China's processing trade regime to analyze the role of trade costs on trade within global production networks (GPNs). Under this regime, firms are granted duty exemptions on imported inputs as long as they are used solely for export purposes. As a result, the data provide information on trade between three sequential nodes of a global supply chain: the location of input production, the location of processing (in China) and the location of further consumption. This makes it possible to examine the role of both trade costs related to the import of inputs (upstream trade costs) and trade costs related to the export of final goods (downstream trade costs) on intra-GPN trade. The authors show that intra-GPN trade differs from regular trade in that it not only depends on downstream trade costs, but also on upstream trade costs and the interaction of both. Moreover, intra-GPN trade is more sensitive to oil price movements and business cycle movements than regular trade. Finally, the paper analyzes three channels through which intra-GPN trade have amplified the trade collapse during the recent Global Recession.Economic Theory&Research,Free Trade,Trade Policy,Emerging Markets,Currencies and Exchange Rates

Resonances in small scatterers with impedance boundary

With analytical (generalized Mie scattering) and numerical (integral-equation-based) considerations we show the existence of strong resonances in the scattering response of small spheres with lossless impedance boundary. With increasing size, these multipolar resonances are damped and shifted with respect to the magnitude of the surface impedance. The electric-type resonances are inductive and magnetic ones capacitive. Interestingly, these subwavelength resonances resemble plasmonic resonances in small negative-permittivity scatterers and dielectric resonances in small high-permittivity scatterers. The fundamental dipolar mode is also analyzed from the point of view of surface currents and the effect of the change of the shape into a non-spherical geometry

Prepaid pulse case received attention from various media, both print, electronic or online. In media judge, this case was a part of a crime by selling consumer data. One media that give more attention to the case is Tribunnews.com, which is have a lot of online media network; compared with the other online media. In connection with this research, through Robert M Etman Framing methods, the research will see the image of the selection process by this case, and highlighting certain aspects of reality. The research results show that this case constructed a consumer fraud issues. This means, that Tribune saw this problem as categorized in the realm of law. There is a deceptive element of the operator, and in this case the defrauded party (consumer). From the overall results, Tribunnews.com news framing at the legal issues of fraud

The background of this study is interconnection phenomenon that has hardly examined. This one focuses on questioning the network interconnection structure application in the public service, including e-govt. The results show that Interconnection network structure has been already adopted. The ability of computer radius between computers is 5-10 km, with 10-100 Mbps bandwitch, with LAN Network Interconnection Structure. Router and gateway are already interconnected, except LAN. In overall, LAN is the network structure with related phenomenon, the stage of e-gov adopted in goverment, variants of 12 question was done in the development of e-govt agencies context. There are 3 that adopted: information site creation, human resources preparation, and internal dissemination of information sites. The level of e-govt development phase are divided into 4: preparation, maturation, consolidation and utilization. But generally, the level is in the preparation phase. The public has not be able to enjoy public service. The condition is not favorable to the public caused by a number factors of humanity (such as culture of sharing-sharring the information; culture of documentation). This increased interconnection implementation related and e-govt ahead requires an urgence of implementation of socializing and technical guidance related to implementation of interconnection and e-govt in the Government apparatus
